5 New England NonProfits Making a Difference in Their Communities

Oct 22, 2024Events

It’s that time of year again when everyone’s inboxes are overflowing with donation requests in preparation for Giving Tuesday. With so many amazing organizations out there, all genuinely in need of support, it can feel overwhelming to figure out where to focus your support.

When I’m deciding where to give, one thing I always look for is whether an organization truly walks the walk and lives up to its values. As a public relations professional, I have the privilege of working closely with some incredible nonprofits that do just that. They’re making a huge impact across New England.

Whether you’re looking to donate, volunteer, or just learn more about the great work happening in this community, these nonprofits are worth your attention—not only on Giving Tuesday but also all year round!

1. Health Imperatives

Health Imperatives is dedicated to addressing the significant wealth gap in Southeastern Massachusetts and the Cape & Islands by providing essential health services to underserved communities. As the cost of living rises, many families are struggling to access basic needs. Furthermore, more than 50% of those seeking care at Health Imperatives lack health insurance.

The organization offers a wide range of services, including sexual and reproductive health care, gender-affirming hormone therapy, WIC nutritional assistance, and support for survivors of domestic violence and sex trafficking. They creatively combine resources to ensure that no one is left behind, finding innovative ways to meet the needs of the most vulnerable.

2. Catania Cares

Catania Oils, a family-owned business, established Catania Cares in 2023 as a nonprofit arm to further its philanthropic efforts. This initiative supports various causes, including cancer research through a long-standing partnership with the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Jimmy Fund. The organization’s annual golf tournament has helped raise over $1.3 million for the Jimmy Fund alone.

Beyond this, Catania Cares engages in community projects such as subsidizing road cleaning in Ayer, Massachusetts and donating time (and cooking oils) to Loaves & Fishes, a local food pantry. The nonprofit accepts grant applications on a rolling basis to distribute support to local causes in need.

3. Doc Wayne

Doc Wayne takes a unique approach to mental health by offering therapy through sports. This innovative concept helps children and teens work through their mental health challenges by engaging in physical activity, which reduces stress and creates a more comfortable space for healing.

The organization also trains others to support youth through its Champions Network, teaching adults to include trauma-informed, sport-based mental health support in their work with young people. Doc Wayne’s work is life-changing, providing unconventional yet effective therapy for kids in need.

4. Boys and Girls Clubs of Dorchester

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Dorchester connects young people and their families with opportunities that promote diversity, growth, and success. Across three Dorchester clubhouses, the organization provides life-enhancing programs that inspire hope and opportunity for youth in the community.

BGCD is currently raising $70 million to build The Fieldhouse+, a multi-level, fully accessible facility designed to provide Boston’s youth with a safe and inclusive space. This state-of-the-art center will serve as a vital resource for over 1,000 Boston Public School students and 50,000 young people living nearby. With a focus on high-quality programming, The Fieldhouse+ will foster community connections, mentorship, and growth for children of all abilities.

I can tell you from experience that the kids who are members of BGCD are amazing. Many speak openly about how they come to de-stress and receive support from people who care for them and treat them like family. It’s such a wonderful experience for them that many eventually return to work for the organization.

5. Anthony F. Cordeiro Charitable Foundation

The Anthony F. Cordeiro Charitable Foundation, founded in 2017, focuses on enriching the lives of families and children in Southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island. By partnering with nonprofit organizations, the Foundation provides critical resources to those facing life’s challenges, including access to health and mental health services, food, and shelter.

Anthony F. Cordeiro, a respected businessman in the Greater Fall River Area, established the foundation to give back to his community and offer support where it’s needed most.
